We have been lusting (borderline obsessing) over curls all summer. Not beach-y soft waves, we mean full on SPJ, but even bigger. Unfortunately, getting a perm is simple not an option (that stuff can go horribly wrong sometimes?). Luckily, makeup artist and hairstylist Gabrielle Houghton found us a temporary fix using tongs, bobby pins and some product.
Here Gabby shares her step-by-step guide in creating this look on model Dana :
Apply priming spray (such as R+Co One) and curl-enhancing cream (such as Kevin Murphy Motion Lotion) generously to wet hair and dry with a diffuser on low speed.
Using a 3/4” curling wand, tong thumbnail-sized sections of the hair for definition, leaving out the face framing pieces.
Around the face, curl the hair in thumbnail-sized sections again, this time starting the curl about three inches away from the root.
Spray the curls with a brushable hairspray (such as R+Co Outer Space working spray) before allowing the curl to cool. For hair types more resistant to hold a curl, pin the curls in place to cool.
Thoroughly brush out the curls with a natural bristle brush starting at the bottom.
Using bobby pins and U-pins, secure longer layers by pinning them at the nape of the next, letting the top section of hair overhang to conceal
Rub nourishing oil (such as Bumble and Bumble Hairdressers Invisible Oil) between your hands and scrunch up the curls, defining curls with fingers as desired.
