Make-up Artist Angela Stewart Shares Her Island Beauty Essentials

In this round of postcard series,

We asked New Zealand Make-up Artist Angela Stewart to share her holiday skincare routine, as well as her go-to beauty products on her island get-away.

Earlier this summer (if we can really even call it that), I was lucky enough to have a getaway sans children with my handsome husband to Hawaii.

For once, I didn't feel like I had overpacked, which I later discovered (not so smugly) was because I had somehow packed numerous tops and very little bottoms and only one dress!

Beauty-wise, though, apart from a separate bag dedicated solely to sunscreen, I snuck in a couple of pesky things that just wouldn't allow me to actually zip the damn thing up, but still, it was a pretty good effort for someone who generally wants to take the whole house and not just the kitchen sink.

I also secretly took comfort in knowing I would have the opportunity of stocking up in the holy grail of cosmetics, Sephora, before we left.

Generally, I like to keep my daily beauty routine fairly simple, so knowing we would be spending a huge part of our day draped over sun loungers melting into our towels, I knew the last thing I wanted to do was wear full slap. Now don't get me wrong. I'm no bare-faced free spirit either. I like a little something to hide various things I wish I could Snapchat filter away!

DAY TIME ROUTINE :

After my usual cleansing/moisturising routine ( I'm currently using MAC Oil Control Lotion), I added an even layer of Daylong Suntivity Sunscreen for the body. This is made all the easier with the very specific table of application hidden under the main label. Foolproof really. I love the fact it gives your skin a sheen as well as a high sun protection factor that lasts for up to eight hours, obviously leaving more time for the important things such as cocktails by the pool !

For the face, my Dermologica Age Smart Skin Perfect Primer is a winner because I'm naturally oily. I find this helps keep the shine at bay for just that little bit longer. It also has a sheer tint that gives you a little colour and, most importantly, it has SPF 30. It suits more of a medium skin tone, so I possibly wouldn’t recommend it if you had a fairer or darker skin tone.

Next, if I felt like I need it, I would buff in the tiniest amount of concealer, mainly to minimise any redness or to hide the odd blemish (MAC Studio Finish Concealer is my desert island product). A quick brush of the brows; I didn't bother to use any product (or mascara), as I knew my brows and lashes would spend 90% of their day hidden behind sunglasses and my hipster-worthy wide brimmed hat.

A light swish of blush is definitely something I can't forego. So I opted for MAC Fleur Power, which is a brightening pinky coral that suits just about everyone. Finally, to add a subtle hint of life to my lips, I used a slick of a newly discovered Sephora gem—a cute as a button sheer lipstick called Sweet Coral, which was the best last minute $6 bargain buy I think I've ever made.

For night: Once the sunset crept in and the stomach began to rumble, a quick shower meant a clean slate. Skipping the need for sunscreen, I would again cleanse, drown myself in a healthy dose of MAC Prep + Prime Fix—a cult product and make-up artist favourite. This gem added the extra hydration to my skin after a long day in the sun. Moisturise, prime, and then buff in the smallest amount of MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation with a medium-sized fluffy brush where needed. Brows were given some attention by lightly filling them in with my Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz pencil. Next up was to add a subtle highlight to the high plains of my face (cheekbones, bridge of the nose, and Cupid's bow). I did this with the divine Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette from MECCA. This can be used all over to "capture, diffuse, and soften the way light reflects on your skin" or as a soft highlighter in specific areas. I also used the darker of the three shades as a base before sweeping a wash of MAC Texture over my eyelids. If I wanted a bit more depth, I added a decent amount of MAC Teddy Eye Kohl through the lash line and smudged out with my finger. Lashings of mascara! Hooray! I think I was having withdrawals having not worn any during the day. Step in Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara. This amazing formulation gives the most intense fluffy lashes, lengthening, curling, and thickening and because it is waterproof, there is no way it is melting off halfway through dinner. This was followed by blush (I was back to my old faithful) and to finish off a quick swipe of my Sephora Sweet Coral Balm filled in over the top with my trusty MAC Cherry Lip Liner. Instant glam!

All this was topped off with a whiff of Giorgio Armani Si Intense Eau De Parfum (thank you, duty-free). It’s a heady concoction of rose, vanilla, and bergamot with underlying woody notes. Perfect for the balmy evenings spent sipping rich Californian Chardonnays pinching ourselves and not wanting to come home.

BRING ME THAT HAMMOCK, GLASS OF VINO AND THAT SEXY HAWAIIAN SUNSHINE !
