This is what I’ve learnt in 2020

Every New Year’s Eve, right before the clock strikes midnight, I swiftly manoeuvre myself behind some dumpster portaloo and have a not so tactical yack to ensure I can proceed on with the festivities in tip-top shape. If I am one thing, it’s elegant, darling. It’s a tradition!

We live in a postcolonial world dominated by the ideologies of Europe and so our beauty standards have been and are still set by ‘whiteness’. Whiteness is about upholding power and superiority over others and one way this is done is by normalizing it.

2020 has thrown challenges at us from every angle. Even writing this sentence, in a moment of reflection is a challenge, as like so many of you, the end of year burnout has well and truly arrived. And with the busy holiday season now upon us, it’s hard to comprehend when it is all going to slow down so we can catch our breath, switch off and pick up a good book.

I can still remember the first time I ran my eyes over the iconic Man Repeller home screen.
The sparkling eyes of aspirational writers and models dressed to the nines in eccentric ensembles stared back
at me…
It’s not every day we put out sponsored content. There is nothing more I disdain than publications who plug paid pieces like it’s raining money. Each day it’s a new something which is always nothing. But I get it. People need booze, dosh, some sweets in the pantry.
Then The Avo Tree came into our lives…

I wanted to explore modern beauty and the diversity we are surrounded by, but rarely highlight. Everyone is unique and has something so special about them. Whether it was something they were bullied for as kids or adults, we learn to embrace ourselves and what sets us apart from others. At the end of the day, I wanted to highlight beauty in it’s simplest form.

I’m officially back on my bullshit.
These last few months have been rude. Almost devastating. The great thing about our readers is they (often) kindly extend their attention to our personal Instagrams, so a lot of you will know what happened to my face.
Do you know what I mean?

We need to talk about Conversion Therapy

From the Homosexual Reform of 1986 to Marriage Equality in 2013, queer people have devoted decades of activism to queer liberation. Yet, there are still many obstacles in the New Zealand system blocking our human rights from becoming our human reality. An outsider would easily describe New Zealand as one of the best countries in the world to be queer - from outside New Zealand looks like the queer utopia.

Black-owned New Zealand brands to support now & always

It was a pleasure to round-up just a few of my treasured black-owned local businesses. Now, and always, we need to collectively use our wallets and voices as mechanisms for change, support and empowerment.

Despite the show displaying mad stereotypes and several healthy doses of second-hand embarrassment, I loved it.

I don’t even know where to begin…
It’s taken me an hour to type this sentence. This is a shit-show. I really need to do this article justice, for selfish reasons, of course.
