ANNA ON HER MUSIC, PARENTING, KYOKUSHIN KARATE, AND BEAUTY ROUTINE
We've been a fan of Anna's music for a long time now. Her strong soulful voice is inescapable as it is inspirational... If you listen to Anna's music, you are likely to end up humming her tunes for the next couple of days (don't tell us we didn't warn you).
The Raglan-born singer and song-writer, is also a kyokushin karate champ, mum-to-two, an amazing baker, and a marathon runner. Yep, the girl knows what's up. Get to know the musical muse in our interview below.
MUSICAL BEGINNING :
"I remember singing along in the car to a Weezer CD (the blue album) and my Dad saying to me “who taught you how to harmonize like that?” I didn’t even realise I was doing it. I’m still a fiend for some sweet vocal harmonies!
I have always loved music. I know the thing that got me properly hooked on it was writing my first song when I was 14 or 15. It felt like magic. It still does!"
PROUDEST MOMENTS :
"I have 2 sons (Arlo 2.5 years and Eddie Ray 9 weeks) who are definitely the best things I’ve ever achieved. I think being a good parent is the hardest and most important thing ever. I don’t always nail it (many parent fails! That’s part of life), but since having a kid I have a new found respect for anyone who brings up a balanced, compassionate, kind, useful human being- it’s not easy! I have done other stuff like releasing albums and getting degrees and karate black belts (I’m a 2nd dan in Kyokushin from another life that I hope to get back to soon), but parenting is the toughest and least acknowledged role for everyone I think."
IN ANOTHER LIFE :
"I did a lot of karate! I had just started getting back in to it when I got pregnant again so I’ll get back to that down the track. When my mum schedule doesn’t allow for karate training I run. I love running. I want to run a marathon for the first time maybe in 2017. Also in another life I was a major nerd studying Linguistics and Japanese at university. I still have a mad passion for language and am engaging that again by learning Te Reo Māori through AUT’s excellent night classes. I think it’s a shame NZ is so monolingual. Languages are such interesting things - windows into a different worldview."
NEW MUSIC :
"My new album Luck/Time will be out on October 21st! The new single Apples is out Sep 9 with another awesome video directed by Aidee Walker. I’ll be touring with my badass band too: Oct 28 Auckland; Oct 29 The Mount; Nov 4 Chch; Nov 5 Wellington. (See annacoddington.com for details)."
BEAUTY ROUTINE :
"I use Trilogy’s Cream Cleanser in the shower then use Trilogy Vital Moisturiser SPF15. At night if I have any make up on I use Trilogy’s Make Up Bee Gone Cleansing Balm. It’s divine! The smell is amazing and it’s a great make up remover, and finally I use Trilogy’s Rosehip Oil at night too."
BEST KEPT BEAUTY SECRET :
"You can use any oil as a makeup remover! It’s like magic. Olive oil, almond oil- whateves."
ON MY BEAUTY SHELF :
"Trilogy rosehip oil, Davines LOVE shampoo and conditioner, Trilogy Ultra Hydrating hand cream and a soak with warm water, followed by Almond oil."
FAVOURITE RECIPES :
"All my favourite recipes at the moment come from My Darling Lemon Thyme’s two cookbooks which are both gluten free and vegetarian. I’m not gluten free but I’m most definitely vegetarian and her food is user-friendly and delicious. Her blog has a lot of good options too. Here’s a favourite- the kiwifruit salsa is crazy good."
