According to experts, no.
read up for dermatologist-approved top picks for every skin type.
Finding a good sunscreen is not an easy task. Most of them are super greasy and have that yucky grey-blue film, leaving the skin looking tired and dull. But thank goodness things are changing... The new range of sunscreen products contains skincare ingredients that nourish the skin while also minimising the effects of the harsh UV rays i.e. without having to look like a parfait! It’s seriously brilliant. Fresh dewy skin is now totally achievable without compromising on sun protection. Ticks all our boxes!
Get your basics covered with the right SPF protection :
Sun blocks that include high broad-spectrum protection with UVA and UBA protection (30+ SPF and above) and antioxidants help decrease free radicals and repair pigmentation and collagen damage are ideal.
If you have sensitive skin (rosacea or eczema) then try opting for a 100% physical formula; basically, ones that have components such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide (mineral based), and avoid products with high alcohol content.
We have rounded up our favourite tried-and-tested products that go beyond basic SPF protection by providing hydration, anti-pollution block, vitamin boost, brightening and more. Double-duty all the way!
FOR OILY SKIN (MATTE FINISH):
Ultra Protective Daily Moisturiser 50+ Mattifying
“Anyone knows that when you mix heat, humidity, and sweat on top of make-up, you can end up clogging the pores and making your skin feel extremely oily. Look for a mattifying-based sunscreen that contains silica, which is a natural mattifying ingredient.” says skincare expert, Tracey Beeby. This moisturiser contains silica, Panthenol (Vitamin B5) and Niacinamide to support the skin’s lipid barrier function without clogging the pores.
It’s light, moisturising, doesn’t leave a greasy film when layered under makeup and it is perfectly matte.
FOR HYPERPIGMENTATION AND DRY SKIN:
Murad Luminous Shield SPF 50 | PA ++++
The high-performance ultra-lightweight UV lotion contains porcelain flower extract, which helps even out the skin tone and brightens it, and the grape seed extracts neutralise environmental aggressors.
It smoothens uneven texture, tone, and hyper-pigmentation. The light, hydrating serum soaks into the skin instantly, and the high SPF (50) protective is a must to keep pesky pigmentation and uneven skin tone at bay.
Amen to that!
So how does pollution affect the skin?
Ozone-depleting chemicals add to atmospheric pollution and in turn whirl it into a major skin concern. The amount of pollutants the skin absorbs is almost similar to its respiratory uptake. Sorry, we don’t mean to freak you out, but if this were one of your concerns, then we would highly recommend this sunscreen.
So how does it work?
Pollutant toxins are smaller than the size of our pores, so it can easily penetrate and cause damage to the skin on a cellular level. City Smart forms a semi-permeable film that blocks pollution without actually blocking the pores. The sun protection is in form of 100% Mineral Broad Spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen, micronized zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, well suited to the sensitive skin type. The tined element is somewhat of a hit-and-miss for us, as it can appear to be chalky on darker complexions. All in all, the product is light, melts into the skin, and gives it a beautiful glowing tint.
However, make sure you thoroughly cleanse your skin at the end of the day to avoid product build up.
BEST BUDGET PROTECTION FOR DOUBLE DUTY ANTI-OXIDATION :

The ultra-light water essence like gel consists of a reliable broad-spectrum sun protective and sufficient UVA screening with a light refreshing finish.
