KAREN WALKER’S FAVOURITE Christmas RECIPES, KITCHEN GADGETS AND MORE
Those dinner parties that are thrust upon you in no time! Or maybe they’ve been pre-planned but between work, kids, the gym and life in general, they’ve crept up on you like, well…Christmas! Often these are the nights to relish. The nights your couches get pushed to the sides to make room for the dance floor and you’re left hunting for that special bottle of wine tucked away for such occasion when the night refuses to give way to dawn. What started as a hectic mess and frantic scramble to clear away last minute washing turns deliciously into an effortless flow, like a summer breeze.
Whether your charm comes from eating chips out of a bag, sipping wine in the sun or working with seasonal fresh produce to create wholesome food for your guests, one thing is for sure…no matter how you celebrate the summer – sharing a meal with your friends and family is the best part of any holiday or festivities.
We asked three women that we truly admire on sharing the “magic” behind their last minute dinner parties and how they pull it all together. Their go-to dish, the kitchen essentials, the table setting, the music and so on.
Starting with the formidable business woman, Karen Walker. Renown for her effortless style, Karen’s self-titled empire embodies the playful exuberance of yesteryear while weaving seamlessly an androgynous thread. Karen Walker is a strong fierce businesswoman but she is also a mum to her 10 year old daughter Valentina and her labradoodle Laika.
And we are so honoured to share her tips on our humble little site. Here we go.
PLAYLIST JAMS :
On Christmas Eve I do love a cheesy, croon-y Christmas mix, lots of Elle Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. On Christmas Day I go hard into carols courtesy of a fabulous choir - usually The Choir of King’s College Cambridge. Strictly old school.
SECRET INGREDIENT :
You can never have too much Champagne or dark chocolate at a solstice feast.
SETTING UP THE SPACE :
My Christmas tree lights go on first thing in the morning and don’t get turned off until bed time. They’re crucial for the Christmas vibe.
ALWAYS START WITH A BOTTLE OF :
GO-TO DISH FOR A LAST MINUTE DINNER PARTY
Risotto. I can make it with my eyes shut. My summer favourite is green pea and spinach.
MAGICAL KITCHEN GADGET :
My KitchenAid fizzy water maker is the gadget I’d be most lost without. Followed closely by my Vitamix blender.
FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS RECIPE :
For Christmas Day I’m always asked to make my chocolate truffles. I’m pretty darn good with chocolate dipped mini pavlovas also. And often for Christmas Day I’ll make my Yotam Ottolenghi saffron and broad bean paella for the vegetarians around the table.
