IN CONVERSATION WITH KATE SYLVESTER
Hometown : Auckland
Where do you live now: Auckland, New Zealand
How do you take your coffee: Strong!
Favourite meal: Anything cooked by one of my sons.
Are you able to share a little something about the collection and the inspiration behind it?
A year ago, I discovered a box containing the hundreds upon hundreds of love letters my parents wrote to each other during their courtship in the 1950s. The letters are beautiful, strong and true. This collection is my tribute to their love.
What can we expect in terms of the music, casting and overall vibe
A live performance by the beautiful, ethereal duo Purple Pilgrims, who capture the wistful spirit of the collection perfectly. We have cast a gang quintessentially KS girls. Favourite faces that have been muses throughout the years (Penny Pickard and Katie Braatvedt who’ve featured in numerous KS campaigns over the years and Veronica Crockford-Pound a long time KS collaborator) along with some exciting new faces.
Also to celebrate the launch of our new platform Kate Sylvester Reloved I have woven throughout tonight’s runway looks a number of vintage garments from our archive. Kate Sylvester Reloved is a new online marketplace which allows you to buy and sell pre-loved Kate Sylvester and helps bring to life my commitment to timeless design and creating clothing to last a lifetime not a season.
Creative visualization is powerful. Do you often create moodboards for your collection or do you start with a specific concept or muse in mind while designing?
Always, every collection has a strong concept which begins my design process. I build my moodboard with inspiration images and fabric swatches before I begin to think about the clothing.
Which piece, over the course of all your collections, is the most quintessentially Kate Sylvester?
I call it the Kate dress. She’s a classically feminine dress shape with a long sleeve, defined waist and slightly a-line skirt that effortlessly suits everyone.
What’s the coolest/weirdest/most exciting placing a Kate Sylvester piece has ended up?
Jacinda Ardern being sworn in as PM in our Nadia dress and Avalon jacket was pretty cool and exciting.
Tips on having a work life balanced in an industry that is all consuming?
When I leave for the day, I leave work behind completely.
Lastly, how do you look after your skin and health during fashion week chaos?
Drink plenty of water and green tea in an attempt to balance the increased caffeine intake, and trying to sleep as much as possible.
