GLOSSY GLOSS | Is lip gloss the new matte?

GLOSSY GLOSS | Is lip gloss the new matte?

For quite some time, the matte lip has been the front runner in make-up trends—from celebrity lip kits breaking the internet to shine-free lips spotted on the runway and the red carpet. But like any good fashion cycle, it's out with the old and in with the new (which, of course, isn't really new at all). 2017 is all about the gloss.

Seeing the return of gloss is a welcome change, and it's not just for the lip. Products such as MAC Crème Brilliance Gloss and Glossier have a cult following and with good reason. I love to apply the MAC gloss not only on the lip but also on the top of the cheekbone to add a fresh, youthful highlight. For the slightly more adventurous, a tiny dab on the centre of the eyelid can breathe new life into a nude make-up.

This is great news for those with precision problems. No steady hand needed here; a slick of gloss with a pop of colour can have just as much impact as a perfectly etched matte lip. And while my memories of past lip gloss dalliances consist mainly of mouthfuls of hair stuck to my face, it's worth noting that many new glosses come in advanced formulas concentrating on hydration, sheen, and comfort.

As you can tell, the Sauce team is pretty stoked with the idea of hydrated glossy lips. We road-tested some of our favourites in this shoot, and I have shared my front runners below.

A perfect example is the MAC Lipglass range that has had a makeover of its own. Not only have they been repackaged but they also now come in 57 mouthwatering shades. And while they still deliver the same coveted high shine I rocked in the 00s, the product also includes the new outshine moisture complex—a delicious concoction of coconut, babassu, apricot, and jojoba oils, all of which aid in the conditioning of the lips.
Available at MAC Cosmetics counters, RRP $38.

My other front runners are:

Tom Ford Patent Finish Lip Color is a combination of a lip stain with an ultra gloss. I love the sleek packaging of this product. Leak proof. It looks like a click pen with a bottom to dispense the product out of a sponge tip applicator. (ps : it had taken a little while to get the pen going, but once the colour kicks in, bham!)

Available at Tom Ford counters (Smith & Caughey's). RRP $88.

Clinique's new Chubby Plump & Shine Liquid Lip Plumping Gloss: A light reflecting, super high shine gloss that also plumps the lips. What's not to love? And it comes in eight shades. Available at Clinique counters (Smith and Caugheys, Farmers, and selected pharmacies) RRP $42.

Bobbi Brown Eye Gloss: A liquid eyeshadow but not as we've seen it before. This new formula glides across the lids, leaving a glossy, beautiful high shine finish. But the best bit is it doesn't leave the eyes feeling sticky. Say what?! Available at Bobbi Brown, Britomart. RRP $59.

Estee Lauder's Pure Color Envy lipgloss is much more pigmented, and an easier transition for lipstick lovers. The formula is hydrating by not the least bit sticky. Potent Petal is a beautiful everyday nude on lighter skin tones. Used on on the left here. Available at Estée Lauder counters, RRP 59.

Sephora Ultra Shine Lip Gel collection: Available in 34 shades, this gloss provides the ultimate water-like shine. It comes with a unique hourglass curved applicator that hugs the lips for an easy-peasy application. Available at RRP $18.

Although we are talking about lip gloss here, just wanted to take a moment to mention  L'Oreal Paris 1 day Colorista Spray used on our model Olivia's hair. Disappeared in 1 shampoo. Quick dry. No chalky finish. And no, it doesn't run colour on your clothes. Dreamy ombre pink hair is now one spritz away you guys.
