We talked to designer Liz Findlay about her design direction and inspiration for Zambesi's AW 18 collection. We also had a brief chat with Kiekie Stanner about her makeup direction, as well as lead hairstylist Richard Kavanagh about the straight shiny super hero locks, tough grunge girl hair, nineties fresh curls, shaved heads, dreads and more.
DESIGNER LIZ FINDLAY OF ZAMBESI : “Being a Mercedes Benz fashion week showcase this year gave us the opportunity to begin NZFW with a great show. We were asked to create two bespoke pieces for Mercedes Benz, one womenswear and the other one in menswear. This was the starting point of the collection. The silver fabric used for those two designs paved the way to the rest of the collection."
KIEKIE STANNER OF MAC COSMETICS : "For Zambesi at New Zealand Fashion week this year it’s all about a very modern and fresh way of wearing Zambesi. We wanted it to feel like it had this almost futuristic quality to the makeup, so it's all about really beautiful-highlighted-perfected-glowing skin, from head to toe. With beautiful delicate washes of pastel colours around the eyes, both in lemon yellow and soft baby pink with an electric pop of colour under the lower lash line. So it feels very fresh and very beautiful and minimal but at the same time, it has this almost kind of Zambesi sci-fi quality to it."
RICHARD KAVANAGH OF REDKEN : “For this show we embraced the idea of individuality and unique personalities. The casting is so diverse that we decided not one consistent look would be right for every model. All we did was make every individual into the coolest version of themselves. They all needed to feel like they could be in a self-service magazine editorial from any era so we used Redken’s One United – multi benefit spray to create a slightly dirty texture for some, and for other’s we put hair up and smeared Redken’s Rough Paste 12 through it to give a grimy feel. There’s straight shiny super hero locks, tough grunge girl hair, nineties fresh curls, shaved heads, dreads and everything in between.”
