Postcard Series | With Love From OPPO RENO Suite [Pure Pods] in South Island

Nothing says a good time like sunshine, organic wine, and a luxury glass pod in the middle of nowhere. We started our trip on a sunny, crisp day in Christchurch with enough gusto for wine tasting and cheese platters to take us through the weekend.

It has had been more than eight years since my last trip to Christchurch. The last time I was here was pre-quake and the city was in all its Victorian England glory. This time, I was introduced to a different Christchurch, almost like a younger, cooler sibling that is still a little rough around the edges. Some of the old structures have been fixed up and returned to its former glory and some of it has been repurposed in a clever way without erasing its original charm. With its slightly crumbling glamour, the current-day Christchurch reminds me so much of Berlin right now. There is so much art, culture, and cool restaurants to discover and explore.

After spending an incredible day in Christchurch, we drove 40 minutes north to our weekend getaway to experience the new OPPO RENO x10 Zoom smartphone in the idyllic landscape of Canterbury’s Waipara region in an eco-friendly retreat called Pure Pods, which has been hired out by the phone company for the next few months to be transformed into OPPO Reno Suite. We stopped on the way at Pegasus winery in the region, so, of course, some wine tasting and wine shopping was on the cards.

Having long shed its reputation as a muddy water region, Waipara is still often overlooked by travellers who tend to focus more on the Queenstown circuit. If you’re a fan of wine and sunshine, the wineries in this region are some of the best in the country and there is plenty of it to explore. The region is pretty special. The oldest penguin fossil, thought to be more than 60 million years old, was discovered in the Waipara Gorge. The best part — the glass pod by Pure Pods in Waipara region situation in the midst of Greystone Winery.

Our OPPO Reno Suite glass retreat for the weekend was nestled in the verdant wine region and merino farm. The views were captivating and the food in our little pod was sourced from the region’s organic farm. Every little detail was thoughtful and sustainable.

The entire space, including the flooring, walls, and ceiling is made of glass. The highlight was lying in our warm bed surrounded by the magnificent bewilderment of stars in the dark night sky!

And if you’re looking for recommendations for Christchurch, we’ve got this sorted too. Here are my personal favourites in the city :

THE ARTS CENTRE : Start at the Art Centre and explore the gallery, cinema bar, and the beautifully restored building.

BOTANICAL GARDEN AND WINTER GARDEN : Make your way across to Hagley Park for a stroll. The wintergarden is an absolute must on my list.

ILEX CAFE : Right across the wintergarden is Idly Café, adjacent to a glasshouse. It’s a modern café that caters to vegans, gluten-free  and dairy-free requirements, etc.

ART GALLERY : Stroll into the city to explore the Art Gallery and its impressive art shop to take some quirky souvenirs home.

STROLLS : Walk over to the Cathedral Square and towards the banks of the river Avon. Between Hereford Street and Cashel Street, there are a few spots to catch some sunshine. Walk to towards 185 Empty Chairs and Cardboard Cathedral.

C1 CAFÉ : Pause for a late afternoon cuppa or drinks with curly fries. Make sure you sit on a table by one of the tubes and watch your fries fly through the tube from the kitchen.

HELLO SUNDAY :Perfect for a morning brunch to set you up for the day. Make sure you make a booking. This café is located a 10-minute drive from the city centre.

5TH STREET :The perfect place to wind down with dinner and cocktails. Make a reservation as this place gets booked out. Located 10 minutes outside of the main city centre.

PEGASUS WINERY for wine tasting. They also have a restaurant for lunch. Bookings are required.

BLACK ESTATE is a family-owned, organic winery restaurant. Highly recommend for lunch with a view.

GREYSTONE for wine tasting and winery tour. Tours don’t take place during the weekend and bookings are required for wine tasting. They do a mean cheese platter from all the local organic produce but make sure you pre-book this one.

Special thank to our friends at OPPO NZ and our wonderful driver Sammy :-)
