Trish Peng | Couture Designer

A peek-a-boo into Trish Peng’s label and beauty routine.

Ever since the knockout red lace bridal gown (with a record-breaking 20-meter long silk tulle trail) went down the runway, Trish Peng has been on our radar. The Kiwi designer, who took NZ Fashion Week by storm, is currently based in LA, and she has been running her label Trish Peng successfully overseas as well as her atelier here in New Zealand.

Trish's evening and bridal gowns not only cater to her client’s needs but she also carefully selects colours, fabrics, and embellishments that truly reflects their personality. She started her own brand during her third year at Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design to launch a solo show in Waiheke Island. As a young entrepreneur, the Kiwi designer is a true inspiration for Saucettes and the one who makes you believe in the power of loving your job.

Tell us a little something about you and what inspired you to start your own label?

I was born and raised in Auckland. I knew when I was seven that I wanted to be a designer. I would dress up in my Mum’s wardrobe any chance I could. Soon, my Mum purchased a little sewing machine, and I taught myself the basics of how to sew.

Also, I think growing up with my parents who started their business inspired me so much to start out on my own. I’ve always had big dreams, and I think when I was little, I learnt about Vera Wang and I was inspired to have my own brand.

Tell us a little bit about your brand. What inspired the aesthetic?

Everything we do has a personalised touch. We custom-make every gown to each client’s measurements, whether they are choosing a current design of ours, mix and matching our designs, or creating something entirely new for them. It is a journey we go on with each client of ours who then becomes part of the Trish Peng family.

Let’s talk about your beauty routine. How do you start your day?

I begin my day with using my set of Trilogy Balancing Gel Cleanser and Moisturiser. I don’t like to wear too much make up on my face, so for day-to-day, I simply wear a bit of NARS Tinted Moisturiser with a bit of NARS Light Optimising Primer underneath, which both have SPF 30. My must-use product is the NARS Concealer that covers up the under eyes and any blemishes. If I want more coverage, I use Nude by Nature Mineral Powder on top, otherwise, I go straight to my MAC Compact on my T- zones and finish it off with my MAC Bronzer and Blush.

For the eyes I usually have Ashley Allen Eyelash extensions and they last around a month. So I only need to add a bit of MAC Eyeliner and Dior Mascara onto the bottom lashes. For the lips I like to have a bit of natural colour for the everyday look so I have my favourite NARS lipstick in 'Jane' shade

Fragrance of the moment?

Narciso Rodriguez ‘For her’ is my go-to!

Hair-care routine?

I don’t do a lot to my hair to be honest; blessed with Asian hair J!

I sometimes put a bit of L’Oreal Professionnel Mousse if my hair is wet to give it volume as otherwise it's just dead straight. I also use the Moroccanoil Treatment every fortnight and just blow-dry it. I don’t even own a hair straighter or curler (which my friends find a tad annoying when they come over). If I’m in a bit of rush I actually live by the Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo in Dark Tone – spray and walk away.

Top five products in your makeup bag?

Trilogy face cream, NARS Tinted Moisturiser, NARS Lipstick – colour ‘Jane’, NARS concealer and MAC Bronzer (for that sun-kissed LA glow).

Speaking of LA, that’s a long-ass flight. How do you take care of your skin when you’re traveling?

Face wipes to leave my face refreshed for a long haul flight – clear those pores!

Any beauty tricks that your swear by?

If you wake up with puffy eyes, simply put two teaspoons in the freezer and hold them under your eyes – works a treat!

Your approach to fitness and well-being. Do you workout daily?

I work out about three or four times a week, try to do a combination of Barre class (which is ballet, yoga and pilates mixed together) and cycle class. As I’m based in LA, my girls and I do regular hikes up the canyon.

Words of wisdom for young designers :

I would say to them that you can’t trade anything for experience. I would recommend interning and getting work experience in the industry. Taking the most of every opportunity, as you never know where it will lead.
